As a result, Pascal’s family sought refuge in the Venezuelan Embassy in Santiago nine months after his birth, and were later granted asylum.

The family eventually relocated to the United States, where Pascal grew up in Orange County, California, and San Antonio, Texas.

Pascal’s mother died by suicide in 1999. Pascal began using his mother’s surname professionally after her death, both to honor her and because he claimed Americans had difficulty pronouncing his first surname, Balmaceda.
