On the would-be wedding day, Alexander and two friends traveled to Barcelona to confront Macchiarini. While she remained in the car, her friends faced the surgeon, discovering the existence of his wife and children. Described as “an embarrassed schoolboy who had been caught,” Macchiarini could not meet their gaze.
