The trade, announced on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, marks a strategic maneuver for both teams as they look to strengthen their rosters for the upcoming season.

In exchange for Cease, the White Sox will receive a package of promising prospects from the Padres’ system.

This includes right-hander Drew Thorpe, ranked as the No. 4 prospect in San Diego’s organization and No. 64 on ESPN’s top 100 MLB prospects list, along with right-hander Jairo Iriarte (No. 7 among Padres’ minor leaguers), outfielder Samuel Zavala, and right-hander Steven Wilson.

To accommodate the acquisition, the White Sox designated outfielder Peyton Burdick for assignment, creating space on their 40-man roster for incoming players.

Cease, 28, emerged as a formidable talent in recent years, finishing as the runner-up for the American League Cy Young Award in 2022.

However, he faced challenges during the past season, with his ERA rising to 4.58 after an impressive 2.20 ERA performance in the previous campaign.

Throughout the offseason, Cease’s name surfaced in trade discussions as the White Sox sought to recalibrate their roster under new general manager Chris Getz.

With the Padres securing Cease’s services for the next two seasons, the White Sox aim to replenish their farm system, ranked 20th by ESPN entering the season.

Cease brings a wealth of experience to the Padres, having spent his entire five-year career with the White Sox after being drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 2014.

His career ERA stands at 3.83, demonstrating his ability to compete at a high level in the majors.

As Cease prepares to join the Padres, he adds depth and talent to their pitching rotation, enhancing their competitiveness as they gear up for the upcoming season.

The Padres are set to open their campaign against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Seoul, Korea, on March 20, with Cease poised to make a significant contribution to their pursuit of success.
