Milanés rose to prominence as a result of his highly poetic lyrics and smooth yet emotional singing, becoming one of Cuba’s most popular and respected musicians and songwriters of his time and releasing numerous recordings.

Milanés received two Latin Grammy nominations in 2006: best singer-songwriter album for Como un Campo de Maz (Like a Cornfield) and best traditional tropical album for AM/PM, Lneas Paralelas (AM/PM, Parallel Lines), a collaboration with Puerto Rican salsa singer Andy Montaez.

In addition, he received numerous Cuban honors, including the Alejo Carpentier medal in 1982 and the national music prize in 2005.

Milanés publicly criticized some aspects of the Cuban government after relocating to Spain, but he remained committed to the Cuban Revolution. His willingness to speak openly about the revolution’s failures strained his relationship with Silvio Rodriguez.

Pablo Milanés died on November 22 2022, from cancer at the age of 79. At his family’s request, a wake will be held at the Casa de América cultural centre in Madrid on Wednesday, November 23 2022.
