The Trades Union Congress (TUC) and its affiliated unions maintain that despite numerous pleas, the government has ignored their requests.

Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah, Secretary-General of the TUC, stressed that due to the government’s continual lack of action, Organised Labour perceives no choice but to engage in strike action.

“You may know that the public sector unions under the forum have already given notice that on the 2nd of May, if they don’t hear anything about the payment of this second tier on the 30th of April, they will strike.

“We will want to send this notice to the government that if by the 30th of April they don’t do anything about this our second tier, on the 2nd of May we will all join the forum. I can imagine what will happen in this country if they allow this thing to happen.”

On Thursday, the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) also voiced profound concern regarding the government’s purported neglect to fulfill obligatory contributions for more than 700,000 Ghanaian workers.

NAGRAT President, Angel Carbonu, alleged financial impropriety by the government during a press briefing on Thursday, April 18. He specifically pointed out the failure to pay contributions to the Tier 2 pension scheme and other deductions to third parties since July 2023.

Mr. Carbonu stressed that these deductions are taken from workers’ salaries but do not reach the intended institutions.

According to NAGRAT, this situation raises serious doubts about the future financial security of these workers, especially concerning their retirement.
