Olympic champion swimmer David Wilkie dies aged 70

British Olympic swimming champion David Wilkie has passed away at the age of 70.

Wilkie, who died on May 22, 2024, after battling cancer, was known for his remarkable achievements in the sport. Born in Sri Lanka to Scottish parents, he rose to prominence with his stellar performances in swimming competitions.

His family released a statement saying: “It is with great sadness that the family of David Wilkie MBE announce that he died peacefully surrounded by his family this morning, following his brave battle with cancer.”

His most notable achievement came at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, where he clinched gold in the 200m breaststroke event. Additionally, Wilkie secured two Olympic silver medals and three world titles throughout his career.

Wilkie’s journey to success began with a bronze medal at the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. He went on to win Olympic silver in Munich in 1972 and claimed World Championship gold the following year.

Throughout his career, Wilkie earned several Commonwealth medals for Scotland, including two golds in 1974. In 1975, he achieved a remarkable feat by winning both the 100m and 200m breaststroke events at the World Championships.

His victory in Montreal in 1976 remains one of his most memorable moments, where he not only secured gold but also set a new world record time, beating his competitors by a significant margin. Wilkie’s dominance in the 200m breaststroke event for four consecutive years solidified his status as a swimming legend.

Following his retirement from competitive swimming at the age of 22, Wilkie was honored with an MBE in 1977 for his outstanding contributions to the sport. His legacy continues to inspire future generations of swimmers worldwide.
