O’dell Owens Obituary

O’dell Moreno Owens was a physician, public health official, educator, and health advocate from the United States.

Owens was born in Cincinnati’s West End neighborhood in 1947. Owens attended Antioch College in Yellow Springs after graduating from Woodward High School. He spent a year as an exchange student at Makerere University in Kampala in 1969.

In 1971, he graduated from Antioch University with a bachelor’s degree. He graduated from Yale School of Medicine with a medical degree and a Master of Public Health.

In 1976, he began his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Yale, where he also served as chief resident from 1979 to 1980.

He then completed a two-year fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at Harvard Medical School.

O’dell Owens was nationally known for his work in in vitro fertilization. He founded the University of Cincinnati’s in vitro fertilization program and was responsible for the city’s first successful conception and delivery, as well as the first pregnancy from a frozen embryo.

Dr. O’dell Moreno Owens died on November 22, 2022, at the age of 74. He was only two weeks away from turning 75.
