O’dell Owens Cause of Death

Dr. O’dell Moreno Owens, a long-time Cincinnati health leader, died on November 22, 2022, at the age of 74. He was only two weeks away from turning 75.

Many people remember Owens as a trailblazer and community titan. He dedicated his life to public service.

He served as Hamilton County coroner, president of Cincinnati State, and medical director of the Cincinnati Health Department, among other positions.

Owens was a medical pioneer. He founded the University of Cincinnati’s in vitro fertilization program and was responsible for the city’s first successful conception and delivery, as well as the first pregnancy from a frozen embryo.

Owens was the University of Cincinnati’s first African American board member. He has also served on the boards of U.S. Bancorp, the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airpor and the Lindner Center for Conservation and Research of Endangered Wildlife at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden.
