The National Commission for Museum and Monuments (NCMM) presented wooden and bronze stools used by Oba Esigie and Oba Eresonye during the 15th to 17th centuries.

These artefacts were repatriated by German authorities in 2022. During the handover ceremony, NCMM’s Director-General, Olugbile Holloway, pledged to collaborate with the Benin Royal Court to preserve Edo heritage.

The artefacts were originally looted during the British invasion of the Benin palace in 1897.

The Oba, accompanied by his chiefs and royal family members, danced to traditional Benin music in celebration after unveiling the returned items.

They offered prayers to God and their ancestors, expressing gratitude to the German and Nigerian governments for facilitating the repatriation of these valuable artefacts.
