When he was 19, he was sent to the hospital after he became very sick. The doctors disclosed that his health was deteriorating. His mother, upon fearing for the life of her son, called a traditional medicine woman who performed a renaming ceremony for him and named him Copper Thunderbird.

He recovered after the ceremony and used that name as his pen name for his artwork. In 1956, he contracted tuberculosis and was sent to Fort William Sanatorium for recovery. In 1972, Morrisseau was caught in a fire in a hotel and suffered serious burns.

After suffering several health complications, his health severely declined and he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, resulting in a stroke in 1994.
