On February 14, 2018, Nikolas Cruz a former student of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, had opened fire on students at the school, killing 17 and leaving 17 injured.

Cruz who was 19 at the time, took to his heels, leaving his weapon, AR-15-style semi-automatic behind.

Cruz had been arrested within the hour, and was found to have been exhibiting questionable behavioural issues such as welding guns in the school premises and bringing dead animals to school.
