Roy’s journey in hockey began at a young age, and he steadily progressed through the ranks of junior hockey. He played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) for the Chicoutimi Saguenéens and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. During his time in the QMJHL, Roy showcased his skills and garnered attention from NHL scouts.

Despite being the first overall pick in the 2013 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) Entry Draft by the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, he refused to play for the league unless his rights were traded to a Quebec-based team.

Nicholas Roy was selected 96th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. Nicholas Roy represented Team Canada at the 2014 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, the 2015 IIHF World U18 Championships, and the 2017 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.
