Nick Hitchon, also known as William Nicholas Guy Hitchon, was a well-known person recognized for his quiet and modest demeanor as well as his voracious curiosity about life. He was always one year younger than the Seven Up! episodes in which he featured because he was born on October 22, 1957. Nick was raised in a farming family and is a native of the village of Arncliffe in the Yorkshire Dales.

He discovered his passion of science and served as rugby team captain at Ermysted Grammar School in Skipton from 1968 to 1975. He entered Oxford University with a physics degree, completed his studies as a postgraduate, and graduated at the age of 23 with a PhD in engineering science.
