Despite noticeable weight loss, he kept the severity of his illness a secret. Hospitalized shortly after the Christmas holiday in 1984 due to water in his lungs, Colasanto struggled to remember lines during production.
Released from the hospital, his doctor advised against returning to work. Although he made a brief appearance in the cold opening of the third-season finale episode, “Rescue Me,” his last full episode was “Cheerio Cheers,” filmed in late November 1984.
Colasanto passed away at 61 from a heart attack at his home on February 12, 1985, leaving behind a legacy as a talented actor and integral part of Cheers’ early success.
