Gatwa rose to fame after starring as Eric Effiong in the Netflix comedy-drama series Sex Education (2019–present), which earned him a BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Actor in Television and three BAFTA Television Award nominations for Best Male Comedy Performance.
Gatwa reached a career milestone in 2022 when he was announced as the fourteenth incarnation of the Doctor on the BBC series Doctor Who, making him the first black actor to star in the role in a leading capacity.
