Rapper NBA YoungBoy, real name Kentrell DeSean Gaulden, found himself back in the spotlight for the wrong reasons after being arrested for his alleged role in a “large scale prescription fraud ring” in Cache County, Utah.

The 24-year-old rapper, who was under house arrest in Utah at the time of his arrest, faces a total of 63 charges, including possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, pattern of unlawful activity, identity fraud, forgery, and procuring/attempting to procure drugs/prescriptions.
According to the arrest report, Gaulden was allegedly part of a scheme to fraudulently obtain promethazine with codeine, a prescribed cough suppressant popularly mixed with Sprite and/or alcohol to make “purple drank” or “lean,” which is favored by many rappers.
Police allege that Gaulden and several others attempted to obtain the prescribed medication from multiple pharmacies in Cache County.
In one instance, Gaulden reportedly called in a prescription under the guise of a 74-year-old woman, using the identity of a real physician.

Similar incidents occurred at other pharmacies, leading to the detention and subsequent arrest of two women allegedly involved in the prescription fraud ring.
Authorities also found a prescription bottle of Promethazine with Gaulden’s home, bearing the name of the “patient” for whom the fraudulent prescription was called in.
Additionally, marijuana was discovered in a vehicle registered to Gaulden, along with a gun found inside his home, which he claimed belonged to his wife.
Despite his denial of any knowledge of the prescription fraud, Gaulden was booked into the Cache County Jail, where he was denied bail.
Gaulden’s arrest comes amid ongoing legal troubles, including federal gun and other charges. In December 2023, a federal judge modified his house arrest conditions to allow for mental health treatments.
The rapper’s lawyers had argued that relocating him to Utah would help keep him out of trouble.
