Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter has been permanently barred from the NBA following a league inquiry that revealed he divulged confidential information to sports bettors and placed wagers on games, including betting against his own team.

Porter’s ban, announced by Commissioner Adam Silver, marks a rare instance in NBA history, with him being only the second person to receive such a sanction. The first was former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling in 2014.
Silver condemned Porter’s actions as “blatant,” emphasizing the league’s commitment to upholding the integrity of NBA competitions. The investigation commenced after the league received reports of unusual betting patterns surrounding Porter’s performance in a game against Sacramento on March 20, 2024.
During that game, Porter withdrew after playing less than three minutes due to alleged illness, prompting suspicion. The NBA determined that Porter provided information about his health status to a bettor and that a substantial wager was placed against him not meeting certain performance benchmarks.

The league froze an $80,000 bet linked to Porter’s performance, which would have potentially yielded $1.1 million in winnings. Subsequent inquiries revealed that Porter had also placed multiple bets on NBA games using someone else’s account, amounting to $54,094, with net winnings totaling $21,965.
Raptors President Masai Ujiri expressed surprise at the developments, emphasizing the undesirability of such incidents for players, teams, and the league. The Raptors, in a statement, expressed full support for the NBA’s decision to ban Porter.
Porter, the brother of Denver Nuggets forward Michael Porter Jr., had been on a two-way contract with the Raptors, earning approximately $410,000 for the season. The 24-year-old appeared in 26 games for the Raptors, averaging 4.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.3 assists.
Silver underscored the need for regulatory enhancements in response to the incident, noting ongoing efforts to safeguard the league’s integrity and address issues surrounding sports betting.
Porter has not commented on the matter since the investigation began, and his future in professional basketball remains uncertain.
