Nayyara Noor Obituary

Nayyara Noor was a Pakistani playback singer who was widely regarded as one of the subcontinent’s most popular singers.

She was well-known for her live ghazal singing performances on Pakistani TV shows and in concert halls across the country.

Nayyara Noor died on 20 August 2022 in Karachi after a brief illness at the age of 71. Her death was confirmed by her family on Sunday, August 21 2022.

Nayyara Noor was born in November 1950 in Guwahati, Assam, India, where she spent her early childhood before her family relocated a few years later to Karachi, the capital of newly formed Pakistan.

She attended the prestigious National College of Arts in Lahore, where her singing talent was discovered, and by the late 1960s, she had made her television debut.

Noor received numerous awards during her four-decade career, including the Nigar Award for best playback singer for the film Gharana in 1973.

In addition, she received the government’s Pride of Performance award in 2006 for her contributions to the arts.

In a statement, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his grief and said Noor’s death would cause “irreparable damage” to the music world.
