Michael and Kristine Barnett were the adoptive parents of Natalia Grace a Ukrainian orphan. Natalia was adopted through an emergency adoption process by Michael and Kristine in 2009.

The Barnetts allegedly began noticing violent behaviour from their new family member soon after bringing her home to America. One of the most shocking claims made by the Barnetts was that Michael saw Natalia “standing at the foot of the bed with a knife in her hand,” as he stated in the Curious Case of Natalia Grace docuseries trailer.
Not only that, but Natalia allegedly attempted to poison Kristine’s coffee and drag her into an electric fence, according to Michael. The Barnetts could no longer live under the same roof as Natalia.
In 2013, Michael, Kristine, and their biological children relocated to Canada, leaving Natalia in a rented flat in Lafayette, Indiana. Michael and Kristine eventually divorced, but their allegations against Natalia were not changed.

Although they petitioned the Marion County Probate Court in 2012 to change Natalia’s birth year from 2003 to 1989, the former spouses were eventually charged with several counts of neglect in the state of Indiana in September 2019.
Michael and Kristine were charged in September 2019 with neglect of a dependent, neglect of a dependent causing bodily harm and conspiracy to commit neglect of a dependent. However, the charges against Michael were dropped on October 28, 2022, and the charges against Kristie were dropped on March 24, 2023.
