The passing of Murray Stenson, a local bartender legend, was announced on Friday by Paul Clarke of Cocktail Chronicles. At Tales of the Cocktail in 2010, Stenson was selected Best Bartender in America. Tales of the Cocktail is a spirits industry award show that resembles a cross between the James Beard Awards and the Academy Awards, but with a lot more fantastic drinks. From there, the talk grew a little out of control.

Stenson quit the Zig Zag in 2011. After that he started moving around more frequently. I’ve always thought he was just seeking for a quiet setting to do what he did best—tend bar. His presence would then become a Whole Thing as word spread and people began to gather to marvel at it. As a result, the cycle would restart after he moved on.

Murray Stenson Wife: Was Murray Stenson Married?
Even with his coworkers and acquaintances, twice-married Stenson rarely discussed his family and personal life.
Stenson, who left Shoreline Community College, worked as a shoe salesperson at J.C. Penney, a door manufacturer, and a Safeway night stocker before discovering his passion as a bartender, most notably at Il Bistro at Pike Place Market, according to a 2012 Seattle Weekly article.
