Mostafa El-Abbadi Cause Of Death

Egyptian historian Mostafa el-Abbadi, passed away on February 13, 2017, after a heart failure. He was aged 88.

His daughter, Dr. Mohga el-Abbadi, had confirmed his death and cause of death at the time.

Mostafa was the brain behind the revamp of the Great Library of Alexandria in Egypt.

His proposal for a new library spurred President Richard M. Nixon to visit Egypt in 1974.

Who Was Mostafa El-Abbadi?

Mostafa el-Abbadi was a famous Egyptian historian, and professor who specialized in Greco-Roman studies.

El-Abbadi studied in Egypt and the United Kingdom, at Alexandria University and the University of Cambridge respectively.

He had studied ancient history at both levels, and was later conferred an honorary doctorate from the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM).

El-Abbadi worked as a professor in Greco-Roman studies at the University of Alexandria.

He proposed the revamp of the ancient library of Alexandria, which was eventually funded by UNESCO and completed in 2003.

El-Abbadi was also a member of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Culture (SCC), Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), and l’Institut d’Égypte.

The late scholar is survived by his daughter, Dr. Mohga el-Abbadi, a son, Amr, who works as a professor at the University of California; his sister, Saneya el-Abbadi; three brothers and five grandchildren.
