Monkeypox Washington: How many cases of Monkeypox are in Washington state?

Monkeypox is a viral infection that can result in rashes and other symptoms.

Monkeypox is not frequently found in the US, but there is currently an outbreak with cases spreading throughout the nation, including Washington state, as well as in many other nations.

Even though monkeypox can spread from person to person through any type of close, skin-to-skin contact, the majority of current cases are in men who have sex with other men.

DOH and Public Health Seattle-King County confirmed the first case of monkeypox virus infection in King County on May 27, 2022.

As of 7/22/2022, 83 people in Washington state had tested positive for orthopoxvirus, including one person who had been exposed elsewhere but tested positive in Washington. All positive orthopoxvirus cases are thought to be monkeypox.

You can spread monkeypox from the start of symptoms until the rash has fully healed, which can take 2-4 weeks.

To keep from spreading the infection: Separate yourself from other people and animals (mammals). Do not kiss, hug, cuddle, sleep, or have sex with others.

Do not share bedding, towels, dishes, or utensils.  Do not use commercial travel (aeroplane, bus, taxi, shared car).
