Monkeypox virus is a double-stranded DNA, zoonotic virus and a species of the genus Orthopoxvirus in the family Poxiviridae. It is one of the human orthopoxviruses that includes variola, cowpox and vaccinia viruses.

Variation in virulence of the virus has been observed in isolated from Central Africa where strains are more virulent than those from Western Africa.
The two areas have distinct clades of the virus, termed Congo Basin and West African clades.

Monkeypox Vaccine And Outbreak
To protect people from monkeypox, the Jynneos vaccine was approved by the U.S FDA in 2019. Jynneos (Imvamune or Imvanex) was also approved by the European Medicines Agency in 2013 and is indicated for preventing small and monkeypox disease in adults.
Monkeypox Outbreak: An ongoing of monkeypox that started in the United Kingdom began on April 29, 2022, with the presentation of monkeypox symptoms in a British resident who had travelled to Nigeria, where the disease is endemic.
