Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by a monkeypox virus infection. Monkeypox virus is a member of the Orthopoxvirus genus in the Poxviridae family. Monkeypox was first found in 1958, when two outbreaks of a pox-like disease occurred in research colonies of monkeys, hence the name.

Monkeypox’s natural reservoir has yet to be discovered. African rodents and non-human primates (such as monkeys) may, however, carry the virus and infect humans.

Is there a cure for monkeypox?

Monkeypox virus infection currently has no proven, safe treatment. Smallpox vaccine, antivirals, and vaccinia immune globulin (VIG) can all be utilised to control a monkeypox outbreak.

Since there is no proven cure, prevention is the best cause of action. Some measures that can be taken to avoid infection with the monkeypox virus include: not touching any objects that have come into contact with a sick animal, such as bedding.

Separating infectious patients from those who could become infected. After coming into contact with infected animals or humans, wash your hands thoroughly. Washing your hands with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitiser are two examples.
When caring for patients, wear personal protective equipment (PPE).
