Monkeypox Origin: Where did Monkeypox come from?

Monkeypox is a contagious disease that originated from the monkeypox virus that can affect humans and other animals. Fever, headaches, muscle problems, swollen lymph nodes, and tiredness are the first symptoms.

A rash develops, which produces blisters and crusts over. It takes about 10 days from exposure to the development of symptoms. Symptoms last between two to four weeks on average.

Monkeypox was first identified in 1958, when two outbreaks of a pox-like disease occurred in research colonies of monkeys, hence the name. During a period of increased effort to eradicate smallpox, the first human case of monkeypox was discovered in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1970.

Human cases of monkeypox have been documented in several Central and Western African nations since then. An outbreak in the United States in 2003 was linked to the sale of rodents imported from Ghana at a pet store. Outside of Africa, the first cases of significant community transmission of monkeypox occurred in a current outbreak in the United Kingdom in May 2022.
