After serving in various capacities in government, Bazoum became the 10th president of Niger in 2021, after a failed coup d’état attempt.

He was however deposed on July 26, 2023, following a Nigerien coup d’état, “by members of the presidential guard and the armed forces led by Abdourahamane Tchiani.”
Bazoum was replaced immediately by a military junta known as “the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland”, also led by General Tchiani.
The coup has so far been condemned by the African Union (AU) and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
