Miranda Elish was taken to the hospital on Friday, May 24, 2019, after a ball thrown by a teammate smacked her in the face, according to the team’s Twitter account.

The unusual incident occurred in the second inning of a huge game between Texas and the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa during an NCAA Division I Super Regional matchup.
A player from Alabama bunted, and Texas catcher Mary Iakopo picked up the ball and threw to second base, attempting to catch the runner from first.

The catcher’s throw, however, hit Elish between the nose and cheekbone, and the junior pitcher fell to the ground, The play was halted, and coaches and players gathered in the middle of the field around Elish.
Pitchers may squat when a catcher throws to second base to lessen the possibility of being hit by a ball.
