Minnesota Music Legend Spider John Koerner Passes Away at 85

“Spider” John Koerner, the renowned American guitarist, singer, and songwriter, passed away at the age of 85 on May 18, 2024.

Koerner was best known as a member of the influential blues trio Koerner, Ray & Glover, alongside Dave Ray and Tony Glover.

The trio made significant contributions to the folk and blues music scene, earning them widespread recognition and accolades. Koerner also produced albums as a solo performer and collaborated with Willie Murphy.

In 1983, the Minnesota Music Academy named Koerner, Ray & Glover the “Best Folk Group” and inducted them into the MMA Hall of Fame in 1985. The trio was further honored in 2008 with induction into the Minnesota Blues Hall of Fame for their album “Blues, Rags and Hollers.”

Koerner, Ray & Glover were also commemorated with a star on the outside mural of the iconic Minneapolis nightclub First Avenue. This honor is given to performers who have played sold-out shows or made significant contributions to the venue’s cultural legacy.

Spider John Koerner is survived by his sons, Chris Kalmbach and Matt, his daughter, Mia, and several grandchildren.
