Mike Woodson is a retired American professional basketball player and former NBA head coach, who currently is the head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers men’s basketball team. As a player, he was a standout shooting guard who played for several NBA teams, including the New York Knicks, the Los Angeles Clippers, and the Houston Rockets.

After his playing career ended, Woodson transitioned into coaching, starting as an assistant coach for various NBA teams, including the Milwaukee Bucks, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Philadelphia 76ers.

He then went on to become a head coach, leading the Atlanta Hawks and the New York Knicks. Woodson’s most successful coaching stint was with the Atlanta Hawks, where he led the team to three consecutive playoff appearances and was named the NBA Coach of the Year in 2010.

He later returned to the New York Knicks as head coach in 2012 and led the team to their first playoff appearance in several years.

Woodson was appointed the men’s basketball team’s head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers on March 28, 2021. Woodson guided the 2021–22 squad to a 21–14 record in his first season as head coach, including a 9–11 mark in Big Ten Conference play.

In their first appearance since 2013, Woodson and the Hoosiers ended nine-game losing streaks to Purdue and Michigan and progressed to the semifinals of the 2022 Big Ten men’s basketball championship.

Why did Woodson suspend IU players?

Woodson suspended five Indiana men’s basketball players apparently for curfew violations. In an interview with Don Fischer pregame, Woodson said “I had to suspend five players for disciplinary reasons,” Woodson told Don Fischer pregame.

“We have team rules and ‘hey, I had to follow rules when I played throughout my college days and my NBA days. ‘ They’re rules and when you don’t obey rules, you’ve got to do things that sometimes you don’t want to do.
