After high school, he enrolled at Benedict College for one year before transferring to the University of South Carolina where he completed in 1999.

Colter earned an MFA degree in acting from the Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts.

He made his first screen appearance in the 2002 American medical drama television series ER.

In 2004, he landed his first film role Big Willie Little in Clint Eastwood’s sports drama film Million Dollar Baby.
