Mickey Mantle Cause of Death: How did Mickey Mantle Die?

Mickey Mantle, an American professional baseball player died on August 13, 1995, at Baylor University Medical Center, with his wife by his side, just five months after his mother died at the age of 91.

Mickey Mantle’s damaged liver was ravaged by cirrhosis, hepatitis C and cancer that led to his death.

Doctors discovered Mantle’s liver had been severely damaged by both alcohol-induced cirrhosis and hepatitis C in early 1995. They also discovered that he had undifferentiated hepatocellular carcinoma, an inoperable liver cancer that required a liver transplant.

On June 8, 1995, Mantle received a transplant at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. Mantle was admitted to the hospital again in late July, and cancer had spread throughout his body.

Mantle was laid to rest in the St. Matthew Section of the Sparkman-Hillcrest Memorial Park’s Mantle Family Mausoleum.

Following his death, Mantle’s family filed a federal lawsuit against Greer Johnson, his agent and live-in aide for the last decade of his life, to prevent her from auctioning off many of Mantle’s items, including a lock of hair, a neck brace, and expired credit cards. A settlement was reached that allowed for the sale of some of Mantle’s belongings for around 500,000 dollars.
