Who Was Michelle McNamara?

Michelle McNamara was an American true crime author, who wrote the best-selling book I’ll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman’s Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer.

She had helped in the unveiling of the serial killer identified as as Joseph James DeAngelo, who was nabbed after her death.

Her book later became an HBO adaptation for the documentary series I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, in 2020.

Although, with the help of her husband, Patton Oswalt, the book was completed posthumously, following her death in 2016.

Michelle had died in her sleep, while at home. Her cause of death was ruled as accidental drug overdose.

She is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles.

The Story Behind Michelle McNamara’s Book And The Golden State Killer

Michelle had been drugged and sexually assaulted in Belfast, Ireland, in 1992.

The experience fuelled her interest in joining forces with investigators to fish out a serial killer who was responsible for at least 50 rapes and 13 murders in California.

Michelle had written the book, I’ll be Gone in the Dark, and had termed the killer as “the Golden State Killer”.

Joseph James DeAngelo, an ex-cop was arrested as the Golden State Killer suspect, after a DNA belonging to a relative of DeAngelo matched DNA found at one of the crime scenes.

He had pleaded guilty to the murders and sexual assaults charges and was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
