Michael Tanner, Esteemed Cambridge Philosopher and Spectator Opera Critic, Passes Away

The world of academia and opera aficionados mourns the loss of Michael Keith Tanner, a distinguished British philosopher and revered opera critic, who passed away on April 3, 2024, at the age of 88.

Tanner, a life fellow of Corpus Christi, Cambridge, dedicated 36 years of his life to teaching at the prestigious university until his retirement in 1997.

His scholarly contributions spanned across various disciplines, but he was particularly renowned for his insightful analyses of Friedrich Nietzsche, Arthur Schopenhauer, and Richard Wagner.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Tanner was a prolific writer and critic. For nearly two decades, from 1996 to 2014, he graced the pages of The Spectator with his weekly opera column, captivating readers with his profound understanding and appreciation of the art form.

Even after stepping down from his regular column, Tanner continued to contribute to The Spectator until 2022, leaving an indelible mark on the publication’s cultural discourse.

Tanner’s literary legacy extends beyond his journalism. He authored several influential books on philosophy and edited notable translations of works by Nietzsche and Wilhelm Furtwangler, leaving an enduring impact on the study of German philosophy and musicology.

The esteemed philosopher shared a deep bond with his partner, Michael Amos, a businessman whom he was devoted to. Together, they embarked on a remarkable journey, transforming a disused pub in Cambridge into a stunning home adorned with a spectacular library.

Their weekends were spent in the quaint surroundings of a medieval house nestled within the walls of the Abbey at Bury St Edmunds, where they found solace and inspiration.

An avid cyclist, Tanner embraced life with vigor and enthusiasm. However, tragedy struck in 2022 when he was involved in a cycling accident in the city.

Although his injuries initially appeared minor, Tanner never fully recovered from the incident. He succumbed to a short illness at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, leaving behind a legacy of intellectual brilliance and cultural enrichment.

His spirit lives on through his enduring works, continuing to inspire generations to come. He is survived by his partner, Michael Amos, who cherishes his memory with profound affection and admiration.
