Michael Jackson suffered second-degree and third-degree burns on the scalp and face while filming for the Pepsi commercial featuring fireworks. The tragedy struck on January 27, 1984, during a $5 million deal with Pepsi to work on a promotional campaign at a studio in California.

Michael Jackson was 25-years-old at the time when he shot the explosive commercial alongside his brothers from the Jackson Five. However, the unfortunate happened during the sixth take when he moved too close to a pyrotechnics display behind him while dancing onstage at the Shrine Auditorium to his hit single “Billie Jean”.
Some of the pyrotechnics went off bigger than expected and launched embers into his hair and face, leaving his head engulfed in flame. Michael Jackson was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and was later transferred by ambulance to Brotman Memorial Hospital Burn Center.
