Popular playwright and activist, Micere Githae Mugo has died after a prolonged battle with cancer. Her death occurred on Friday, June 30, 2023. She was 80 years old.

Tributes have been pouring in from several people after her death was announced.
“Sad news that one of our luminaries, sister, and comrade in the long struggle for liberation in Africa and the diaspora, Professor Mic Were Mugo, has succumbed to a protracted fight with cancer. Go well, our darling sister. You live an indelible track record!” fellow writer, Ibbo Mandza.

“With great shock, I have received the sad news of the death of Prof Micere Githae Mugo one of Africa’s greatest literary giants. I had the distinct honour of being one of her literature students at Nairobi School in 1972/3 while she was on a sabbatical from McGill University. May her soul rest in eternal peace,” Lawyer Gitobu Imanyara also wrote.
“We mourn the passing of Prof. Micere Githae Mugo, former Chair of CODESRIA Scientific Committee, a true luminary of literature, activism, and academia. May her powerful words continue to inspire generations,” CODESRIA shared.
