McFadden was a linebacker at the University of Indiana. He played 12 games as a freshman and recorded 20 tackles and a forced fumble. As a sophomore, he recorded 61 tackles, two interceptions, and one forced fumble.
McFadden was rated the most outstanding defensive player in Indiana history. As a junior, he recorded 58 tackles, six sacks, and two interceptions.
McFadden was named the Anthony Thompson Most Valuable Player of Indiana. He recorded 77 tackles as a senior, 6.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.
