Mel James was a Welsh rugby union and professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1960s, 70s and 80s.

James played club-level rugby union for the Resolven RFC and Swansea RFC, at representative level rugby league for Wales and club level for St. Helens as a prop.

James won cups for Wales while at St. Helens in the 1975 Rugby League World cup against England, in 1978 against France, and 1981 against France and England. He also toured with the 1979 Great Britain side in Australia but did not play in any of the test matches.

James played left-prop in St. Helen’s 0-16 defeat in Warrington in the 1982 Lancashire Cup final at Central Park, Wigan on October 23, 1982.

Mel James died at the age of 74 on December 11, 2022.
