Early Life
Jonathan Tah was born February 11, 1996, in Hamburg, to Aquilas Tah and Anja Tah. Jonathan’s father is Ivorian while his mother is German. He has a sister named Deborah Tah Lou.
Club Career
Jonathan Tah began his football career with the youth setup of Altona 93 where he played from 2000 to 2009. Following his stint with Altona 93, Jonathan had a brief spell with SC Concordia before signing with Hamburger SV in 2009.
On August 4, 2013, Tah made his first competitive appearance for Hamburg in a DFB-Pokal match against SV Schott Jena. He played his first Bundesliga match on September 21, 2013, in a 2-0 home defeat against Werder Bremen.
On September 1, 2014, he was sent on loan to Fortuna Düsseldorf for a year. Following his loan stint with Fortuna Düsseldorf, Jonathan signed a five-year contract with Bayer Leverkusen for a fee of €7.5 million on July 15, 2015.
On February 26, 2018, Bayer Leverkusen announced the prolongation of Tah’s contract with the club until 2023. In September 2021, Tah signed a contract extension with the club until 2025.
International Career
Jonathan Tah represented the German national team at the under-16, under-17, under-19, and under-21, before calling up to the senior side in March 2016 for friendlies against England and Italy.
Tah was not included in the German squads for the 2018 World Cup or the 2022 World Cup. He was named in Germany’s squad for UEFA Euro 2024.
