He began the sport of gymnastics at an early age of seven, and his parents enrolled him at the Sapphire School of Gymnastics in Hemel Hempstead.

By the time he was 12, he had joined South Essex Gymnastics Club in Basildon.

Max also attended Longdean School in Hemel Hempstead.
