He grew up in Nova Scotia until the age of 11, when his family moved to Fort Erie, Ontario. His culinary journey was influenced by his grandfather, a restaurateur and former RCMP officer, who owned The Blue Goose restaurant in DeSable, where Matty spent his summers. Despite his initial connection to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Matheson’s family left the church upon leaving Nova Scotia.

Education and Early Culinary Career

Matheson moved to Toronto in 2000 and attended Humber’s cooking program. Although he dropped out briefly to tour as a roadie for a friend’s metal band, he discovered his talent for butchering meat.
