Matthew Louis Gaetz II (born May 7, 1982) is an American lawyer and politician who has served as the U.S. representative for Florida’s 1st congressional district since 2017. A Republican, he has been an ally of former president Donald Trump, as well as a proponent of far-right politics.

United States Rep. Mike Rogers had to be restrained as he angrily confronted Matt Gaetz as turmoil hit the House floor on Friday night during the Speaker vote. The Alabama Congressman was reportedly stopped from lunging at Gaetz.
Rogers jumped towards Gaetz shortly after the Florida lawmaker declared “present” during the 14th round of voting for the next Speaker of the House of Representatives. Florida Congressman’s decision, in part, left Rep. Kevin McCarthy short of one vote from being elected as the Speaker during Friday’s round of voting.
As Alabama Congressman, jumped toward Gaetz, Rep. Richard Hudson had to grab Rogers. The incident was confirmed by the images taken in the chambers.
