Mike, his father, had an early influence in his son’s hockey career, putting him on skates at the age of four and enrolling him at BWC a year later.

His father is now a plumber. However, in his youth he played junior hockey for the Penticton Knights of the BCJHL from 1983 to 1987. He also recorded 66 points in 54 games as a rookie.

Mathew Barzal was coached by his father Mike until he was eight years old, but he has always been a supportive hockey parent. Mathew Barzal stated his father is his biggest fan, but he pushed him throughout his youth hockey career.

Matthew Barzal was selected by the New York Islanders in the first round of the 2015 NHL Draft. He made his NHL debut during the 2017-2018 season and quickly made a significant impact on the ice.

In his rookie season, Barzal’s outstanding performance earned him the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s Rookie of the Year. On January 1, 2023, in his 400th NHL regular season game, Barzal scored his 100th career goal in a 4–1 loss to the Seattle Kraken.
