He currently plays as a center for the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League (NHL). Matthew Barzal was selected by the New York Islanders in the first round of the 2015 NHL Draft.

He made his NHL debut during the 2017-2018 season and quickly made a significant impact on the ice. In his rookie season, Barzal’s outstanding performance earned him the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s Rookie of the Year.

Barzal is known for his incredible speed, playmaking ability, and exceptional on-ice vision. Barzal won the fastest skater competition at the 2020 NHL All-Star Skills Competition.

Internationally, Barzal helped Canada win bronze at the 2014 IIHF World U18 Championships and gold in the 2014 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. Barzal was named an alternate captain for Canada in the 2017 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.

He was one of the top 10 scorers in the tournament and helped Canada win a silver medal. On April 12, 2018, Barzal was named to Canada’s senior team for the 2018 IIHF World Championship.
