According to the Gun Violence Archive, a mass shooting is defined as firearm violence that results in at least four persons being shot at about the same time and location, excluding the perpetrator. Using this statistic, there have been 2,128 mass shootings since 2013, an average of one every day.

The United States has had the most mass shootings of any country. Shooters typically kill themselves or are restrained or killed by law enforcement officers or civilians. Between 2000 and 2016, mass shootings accounted for less than 0.2% of all homicides in the United States.

According to some surveys, the number of public mass shootings has risen since 2011. A mass shooting occurred around once every 200 days between 1982 and 2011. Between 2011 and 2014, however, that rate increased dramatically, with at least one mass shooting occurring every 64 days in the United States.
Between 2009 and 2020, 1,363 people were killed and 947 were injured in 240 mass shootings in the United States, an average of 20 shootings each year. At least 362 children and teenagers were killed, as well as 21 law enforcement officers killed and 35 injured.
