Mary Weiss, born on December 28, 1948, in Queens, New York, was destined for a life immersed in music. Growing up alongside her older sister Betty and older brother George, she found her voice in school plays and choirs. Influenced by the popular songs of the day, Weiss developed a passion for performers like Neil Sedaka and The Everly Brothers, attending her first Everly Brothers concert at the age of 14.

Her musical journey took a significant turn when, along with her sister Betty and twins Mary Ann and Margie Ganser, Weiss formed The Shangri-Las. Their talent caught the attention of local producer Artie Ripp, leading them to sign with Kama Sutra Productions. The year 1964 marked a pivotal moment with the recording of hits like “Remember (Walking in the Sand)” and the iconic “Leader of the Pack,” which soared to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.

The Shangri-Las Legacy and Beyond

The Shangri-Las became synonymous with the girl group era of the 1960s, and Weiss’s distinctive voice and stage presence played a central role in their success. After several years of musical triumphs, the group disbanded in 1968, with Weiss briefly exploring a different lifestyle in San Francisco. Despite the challenges, The Shangri-Las reunited for a memorable performance at Cousin Brucie’s Palisades Park Reunion show in 1989.

Weiss transitioned into a new career, showcasing her versatility and resilience. From working as a purchasing agent in Manhattan to managing a furniture store and becoming an interior designer, Weiss embraced diverse roles in her professional life. Her journey was a testament to her adaptability and determination.

Recognition from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

In 2019, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honored The Shangri-Las’ iconic “Leader of the Pack,” featuring Weiss on lead vocals, in the Singles category. This recognition highlighted the enduring impact of their music and solidified their place in the pantheon of rock and roll history.
