Mary Anne MacLeod was born in a pebble-dashed croft house owned by her father in 1895 in the village of Tong on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland.
Mary was the youngest of ten children born to Malcolm and Mary MacLeod. Her father was a crofter, fisherman, and compulsory officer at Mary’s school.
English was her second language, which she learned at the school she attended until secondary school.

Alexander and Ann MacLeod were her paternal grandparents, and Donald Smith and Mary MacAulay were her maternal grandparents. They were from the Vatisker and South Lochs areas, respectively.
Donald died at sea at the age of 34 when his sailing ship sank, a common fate for men in the fishing-dependent region.
Several generations of the family were forced off their land as part of the Highland Clearances.
The outbreak of World War I further weakened the region’s economy. Mary Trump arrived in the United States in 1930 and became a citizen in March 1942.
