Beloved actor Mary Ann Thebus dies at 89, having worked on most of Chicago’s major stages.

Mary Ann Thebus, a well-known Chicago actress and teacher who spent decades on the city’s stages, died Friday at her home in the Andersonville neighborhood.

Jessica, her daughter, said her mother died after a five-year battle with lung cancer. She was 89 years old at the time.

Thebus was a tireless performer committed to bringing the truth to the stage; she worked in Chicago theater well into her 80s.

Throughout her career, she was known for her exceptional level of craftsmanship. Her vivacity and unpredictability, however, were also trademarks.

Later in her career, several of Thebus’ performances dealt openly with the subject of aging, including her role as Marjorie Prime in Jordan Harrison’s play of the same name, which she performed in 2015 at Writers Theatre in Glencoe, in Joel Drake Johnson’s “Four Places” in 2008 at Victory Gardens Theater, and Samuel D. Hunter’s “Rest,” which she also performed at Victory Gardens.
