Martina Navratilova was born on October 18, 1956, in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Her parents are Mirek Subert, and Jana Navratilova. Her parents got divorced when she was three years old. Her father, Mirek (officially Miroslav Šubert), was a ski instructor while her mother was a gymnast, tennis player, and ski instructor.

Martina Navratilova has a younger sister, Jana Navratilova, as well as an older paternal half-brother. She won her first professional singles title in Orlando, Florida, in 1974, when she was 17 years old. She has won 18 Grand Slam singles, 31 major women’s doubles titles, and 10 major mixed doubles titles.

Martina Navratilova has the Open Era record for the most Grand Slam titles won by a single player. She won the women’s singles title at Wimbledon a record nine times after reaching the Wimbledon singles final 12 times. Martina Navratilova shares the record for the most consecutive major singles titles alongside two other female tennis players, Margaret Court and Doris Hart.

Martina Navratilova won her last major title in 2006. She co-wrote an autobiography titled Martina in the U.S. and Being Myself in the rest of the world, along with The New York Times sports columnist George Vecsey in 1985. She co-wrote a tennis instruction book with Mary Carillo, Tennis My Way (1982). She is the author of three mystery novels with Liz Nickles including, The Total Zone (1994), Breaking Point (1996), and Killer Instinct (1997).
