Growing up in Örnsköldsvik, Näslund’s hockey journey began with inspiration drawn from Swedish NHL and Elitserien star Håkan Loob. His passion for the sport flourished on the outdoor rinks in his neighborhood during his youth, setting the stage for a remarkable career on the ice.
At the age of 14, Näslund’s talents began to shine as he competed with the regional all-star team from Ångermanland. This experience culminated in a significant victory, as he played a pivotal role in securing a national under-16 championship at TV-pucken in 1988.

Näslund’s outstanding performance earned him the prestigious Sven Tumba Award as the tournament’s best forward, foreshadowing the greatness that would characterize his professional career.

Interestingly, Näslund’s path intertwined with that of another hockey luminary, Peter Forsberg. Born within 10 days of each other, Näslund and Forsberg developed a deep connection while playing on separate youth teams.
Their shared journey continued as they joined the Ångermanland team together, forging a partnership that extended to Modo Hockey and the Swedish national team at both junior and senior levels.
Their camaraderie extended beyond the rink, with Näslund and Forsberg attending high school together and even sharing summer jobs at the age of 18. Both young athletes found employment with the same electrical company, a workplace that happened to employ Näslund’s mother and Forsberg’s father, Kent. This unique bond exemplified the close-knit connections that shaped Näslund’s formative years both on and off the ice.
