Mark Girouard FSA was a British architectural writer, authority on the country house, architectural historian and biographer of Sir James Stirling.

Girouard was born on 7 October 1931 to parents Lady Blanche Girouard and Richard Desiré Girouard. According to howold.co, Mark’s mother died when he was 9 years old.

Much is not known about Mark’s father. However, Mark is the grandson of Henry Beresford, 6th Marquess of Waterford through his mother, Lady Blanche Girouard.

Mark was educated at Ampleforth College and then worked for the magazine Country Life from about 1958 until 1967, firstly as a writer on architecture and then, from 1964, as its architectural editor.

That aside, he was Slade Professor of Fine Art from 1975 to 1976 and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1987.

Mark Girouard was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2011 and was on the board of trustees of The Architecture Foundation from 1992 to 1999.

He also founded, and was the first chairman of the Spitalfields Historic Buildings Trust.

Sadly, Mark Girouard died on August 16, 2022 aged 90. He was two months away from his 91st birthday.
